Solution: I took the circle cut out of the hole and cut another circle in that. I had a wood ring and glued it snugly to provide a good air seal. This let the screws catch on the wood rim and the subwoofer sounded much better and louder.

ERROR! I acquired an amplifier and drilled the main hole in the subwoofer box. I drilled a hole 12 inches because I did not have a measuring tape to measure the circumference of the air seal in the subwoofer. The hole was to large and when I placed screws in to secure the subwoofer head, several did not catch on the wood and they stripped. The subwoofer shook and rattled a bit because the air was not sealed and escaped out of the gap.
